Thumbs up Camping for/in Gauteng (ers)

I've been searching around the Forum for some member’s recommendations concerning getting away for the weekend or even longer, for us Gautengers.

Now there many campsites/lodges around but what I was looking for was something that you can experience the bush/wild and can even perhaps test out your vehicles capabilities. Even those places that are just pure beauty and those you have to adventure a bit to get to your destination.
So I've taken liberty to add some names of places that have been recommended by the members that will suit us Gautengers for that weekend away or week away that are not too far off the beaten track. .
As this develops I would like to add what people enjoyed about the place, contact details, recommendation level and why you chose that place and some of the attractions.

So please give me info on where you went, the difficulty of getting there and any other useful info, or better websites. I will update this as it progresses.

Mountain Santuary - http://www.mountain-sanctuary.co.za/ - Check out what Granlor had to say - http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...1&goto=newpost
Serendipity - http://www.serendipitytrails.co.za/ - Between nylstroom and and Naboomspruit - approx 120kms from pta. - really great place for quad bikes, 2 wheelers, and dedicated DS tracks. 1 hour and 3 hour trails. Not too demanding however there are some really difficult sections that you can do with the right ground clearance, or opt for the easy way out. Camp sites are not on top of each other. Ablutions are clean, and in a good state.
Ezemvelo - http://www.ezemvelo.co.za/ - where - travel from JHB to Bronkhorspruit and 30km gravel road. - very nice - highly recommended - family/hikers huts also recommended - Astonishing sized herds of buck, well stocked i.t.o. game. Unique eco-system. Nice hiking. Friendly staff. Very under-rated. Facilities are becoming increasingly neglected though. No formal 4x4 trails.

Hi,

I've been to Moreson Ranch, actual fact I'm heading back there in 2 weeks. The SWAMBO and I really like it there, its clean, you have you own ablution which SWAMBO really likes. Getting there is easy, bit of gravel road to travel on which is in good nic except when we've had a lot of rain. They do have a 4x4 trail there but I've never attempted it myself (not sure my standard highway tyres will make it).

I've also done De Wildt 4x4 a couple times, never stayed there though, didn't know you could. 4x4 track is great fun with chicken routes on most obstacles for when you not feeling so confident.

I've also done B'erakah near the vredefort dome. That is an amazing trail which I highly recommend everyone should do at least once. Elephant Hill (I think thats what it is called) I gave a miss. Seen a few cars not do so well there. I've also never stayed at B'erakah.

Keen to see what the other places are like seen as we just bought an off-road trailer and are trying to make it a rule to go camping at least once a month even if it is just for 1 night so places near jhb are ideal.

Thanks BrndonW.

Thats brilliant. Exactly what I'm after here. At least with this we can get other peoples advice and go away inexpensively monthly.

230 km from Pta just after Vaalwater.
Tar all the way but roadworks between Nylstroom and Vaalwater.
Or travel 50km dirt road from Warmbaths to Vaalwater and mis 95% of roadworks.
Very affordable, camping next to the river (no fishing)
Nice ablutions, electricity.
I dont like the sleeping units much, but clean and cosy.
Lapa with full kitchen available (for units)
2 4x4 trails, I would rate 2-3, lots of river crossings, not deep though
Lots of hiking routes.
Beautiful dam for swimming with foefee slide and swing
They supply free firewood (Hopefully this lasts)

Can't stop singing Ezemvelo's praises for a nearby bush experience. Freeway from Jhb to Bronkhorstspruit town, thereafter they're appr. 30km outside town - mostly on gravel. I've seen herds of buck there that are astounding in size. Previously/still owned by the Oppenheimers which may explain why they're so well stocked i.t.o. game. Unique eco-system. Nice hiking. Friendly staff. Very under-rated. Facilities are becoming increasingly neglected though. No formal 4x4 trails. There was talk of setting up a 4x4 camp, it hasn't materialised yet. I drove the route to the allotted area and it was easy going - over rocks. I recommend the "family/hikers" huts (each has it's own ablution) - for their remote location, as opposed to their very basic accom. Try it! You won't regret it.

Some people are after that I suppose. I always enjoy a bit of "kuir" in the evening, but when camping its never that late.

Hi Jonathan, camping facilities are very basic, no electricity but usable ablutions, and fenced.
They have chalets suited for bigger groups, like school tours, but they suggested we park our caravan nearby and use a long lead through a window of one of the chalets / bungalows.

Arrange with them beforehand about going down into the crater with your vehicle, also about the type of accomodation they can offer - they were very helpful.

Marakele is quite a drive from Tswaing .... suppose it depends how fast you drive, but I'd suggest a sleep-over.

I like to go to Silver Rocks, about 20 km from Bela-Bela on the Nylstroom road. The bathrooms are the best I have EVER seen. Many of the campsites do not have shade as they are still new, but it is very quiet and peacefull; excellent place if you like to take your telescope along.

We took the Maanhaarrand dirt road over the mountain on Friday. I had heard that the road had deteriorated into a really bad state and wasn't disappointed as you can now call it a proper 4x4 only track. No platkar will make it over this piece of road in the near future so the road past Buffelspoort is recommended to reach Mountain Sanctuary Park.

We arrived in the rain on Friday and set up camp in the wet. Campsites are semi grassed but fairly spacious. We were able to set up two trailers with awnings on one site. Powerpoints are not available on all campsites and on those that do have the powerpoint is fairly distant so you will need at least a 20m extention. Each site has a bricked braai with grid but I prefer my own rooster. Baboons and monkeys are a problem so food needs to be locked away at all times.

There is only one ablution block for the whole campsite so I can imagine it getting fairly busy when the campsite is full. There were instances where hot water was finished. The ablutions were serviced regularly and the condition thereof can not be faulted.

Mountain Sanctuary campsite is not the neatest and you can't compare it with a place like Mbizi. It is certainly also not the worst I've camped at and delivers in most needs of the average camper. The campsite is however not the attraction here, the hikes into the surrounding mountains and the lovely rockpools all around are the main attractions. Time during the day are therefore not spent around the campsite but in nature.

We obtained permits from the Mountain Club of SA to enter the kloofs on their grounds and what an experience. Imagine a hike in a riverbed in the water in a 8m wide kloof with rockwalls on either side of about 30m high going on for about 2km. In some places the going is tough and a fair bit of climbing was involved but the kids and adults all enjoyed an experience close to nature.

In summary I will defenitely return for the hiking and natural beauty of the place and as Uys mentioned it is a 'very quiet' camp after 21:00 and the rule is enforced by rangers doing the rounds. Will upload some pics later.
