Default Triton 3.2 Did Injectors, Intake Manifold

Model: Triton D/C 3.2DiD 4x4
Year: 2007
Mileage: 100,000km
Problem: Gradual reduction in performance, worsening of fuel consumption, severe turbo lag
Cause of problem(if known): Dealer suspected worn injectors
Specifics of repair work carried out:
1. Tested injectors found No1 very bad. Innovation Mantenance insurers called for retest in their presence. Now found No1 and No3 bad. Agreed to pay for 2 injectors and tests.
2. The Dealer found intake almost closed with sludge. (see http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/...ad.php?t=83853). Intake now at Radiator engineers being soaked in a solution for 2 days to dissolve the sludge. This problem was suspected more than a year ago and the dealer did not want to pay the labour to open up the manifold to check the sludge build up.
Cost of repair: Total over R23k. My share for the injectors 2 and 4 which maintenance plan did not cover: R7192 plus R1160 labour, plus about R500 for seals, gaskets etc. Plus VAT on the above.
Cleaning of Intake Manifold covered by maintenance plan.
Who did the repair: Mitsubishi Paarden Eiland
Vehicle under warranty, Y/N: No (Still under maintenance plan until 10th July)
Was damage covered by warranty: No. Partially covered on Maintenance plan.
Notes:
1. I have not got the vehicle back yet so do not know the success of the repair, but expect significant improvement in turbo lag, performance and fuel consumption.
2. Dealer suspects that my trips to Namibia and/or Mozambique where diesel quality is poor, caused damaged to the injectors. Will now look at fitting 2nd diesel filter and oil catch can.
3. Maintenance insurers will not cover a faulty diagnostic by the dealers. If no injectors were found to be faulty then I would have had to pay the R2500 labour to remove the injectors for testing and to refit after wards, plus R600 for seals plus R1500 for the test. I was really shocked to find that the maintenance plan does not cover this. But on the flip side why should they pay for the dealers mis-diagnosis? They did say that if the dealer mis-diagnoses a problem then they should not charge me, but Mitusbishi would have
4. Mitsubishi Paarden Eiland have had my Triton for over a month now, but have provided a loan vehicle for the entire period.

Note2:
I got my vehicle back this on 11th July, just one day short of 7 weeks at the dealers. And I had to speak very firmly with them to make sure I got it back before the end of the week. On the trip back from the dealers - about 35kms - the power was smooth through the rev range with no jerking. The onboard computer reported a significant improvement in fuel consumption, but its a bit too early to tell.

I am busy putting an oil catch can together to safe guard against a repeat of the intake manifold sludge build up and I am busy investigating a secondary diesel filter to try and protect the new injectors.

Mileage: 285,000km
Problem: Crank pulley
Cause of problem(if known): Bolt holding pulley coming loose
Specifics of repair work carried out: Swap engine
Cost of repair: R20,000
Who did the repair: Boston Land Rover (closest place to where I broke down)
Vehicle under warranty, Y/N: N
Was damage covered by warranty: N

About 6 months ago I lost power steering. On inspection by eCar it seemed like the bolt holding the main centre pulley to the crankshaft vibrated loose over time which caused the gear inside to strip. Luckly at that time the timing belt stayed in tact.

This time the same happend (possibly cause they did not torque the bolt to the correct specs) again but the pulley came off and landed in the engine bay which caused the timing belt to jump and a few values to bend.

After caluclations it seemed to be a cheaper option to go for another engine with only 143,000km on the clock.

Lesson learned = that bolt should be fastend at the correct spec and locktite applied. Bad design.
Needless to say - 30 day warrantee from eCar was long past...

Tip: If you ever loose powersteering. STOP immediatly and check the bolt on the bottom pulley. Small issue resulting in a huge bill.

Model: Pajero 2.5 Auto SWB
Year: 1995
Mileage: 200,000km
Problem: Cracked cylinder head and damaged cylinders
Cause of problem(if known): Water pipes had perished an finally failed. Engine over heated causing the damage
Specifics of repair work carried out: Engine rebuild, with brand new cylinder head. I considered buying a second hand engine, but i read on the forum about guys who got really poor second hand imported engines. The rebuild was a few grand more expensive, but has a 1 year guarantee. The second hand engine has no guarantee, at least not the ones that i looked at. I would also have to buy the engine in Gauteng, and transport it down to Cape Town.
Cost of repair: R26,500 excluding VAT
Who did the repair: Automotive Dynamics, Brackenfell, Cape Town. I dealt with Riaan
Vehicle under warranty, Y/N: N
Was damage covered by warranty: N

I am pleased with the result. I thought for a long time about the second hand engine, and was worried that a number of things could go wrong, and there was no guarantees that it would work out. So i could have landed up buying a second hand engine, and then had loads of additional work, which then makes the rebuild a cheaper option. The rebuild was one fixed cost, which i knew from the start. The new engine would also mean an engine number change, which is difficult as the car is registered in Windhoek.

I have just return from a trip to Namibia, to visit friends on a farm in the South. 2700km, and the engine seems to be 100%, if not a little bit faster on the open road.

Thanks to the other forum members for posting their problems in this space. Reading that was very helpful.

Pajero Lwb 3.2 Did Gls manual
2001
293000km
Uneven idling and eventual stall of engine. Fault code 48 points to Diesel pump Electronic Governor etc which seem to indicate pump rebuild. Final verdict not out yet but this seems to be the problem at this stage and as it is the first time that she has left me next to the road with engine problems, previous time was due to dual mass flywheel on the clutch assembly(limited to manual models), I thought I would share the info.

Default Faulty clutch

1996 3.5 v6 lwb Gen 2 Pajero.
312000km
Replaced clutch at 300 000km, same time as engine complete overhaul.
Caused by cheap non genuine lifters fitted, one failed, rocker came off lifter and got stuck between cam and valve. Lucky no damage, but opted for complete engine overhaul and new clutch/pressure plate.
+-R40 000.00 using genuine parts except clutch assembly.
Had to replace non genuine clutch, as 1st and reverse could non be selected after driving and getting to operating temperature.
LESSON LEARNT TWICE..... Do NOT use non genuine parts!!!!!!! at myself.
